MISS FIRE ISLAND CONTEST  2007

September 8th, a gorgeous day for a drag queen, not too hot and dry, ushered in the 22nd Annual Miss Fire Island contest to the Grove’s Ice Palace. The stunning Stephanie Stone won the coveted title of Miss Fire Island (and $1000), succeeding the perennial favorite Epiphany. Crowd pleaser and veteran contender Sugga Pie Koko finally realized a dream and took the $750 prize as Entertainer of the Year from former winner Victoria Michaels; the ever sexy Viva Sexx, Miss Fire Island 2000 – do you hear that, girls? – graduated as the Ms. Fire Island winner, receiving her crown from the very classy Demi-Tasse.

The competition was tough and grueling for judges Charity, the most enduring

(oldest living) Miss Fire Island, Ocean Beach’s Mermaid owner Scott Hirsch, designer Dong (Potenciano Adobas), Bruce Michael, the Grove’s  Mr  Island Leather 2001, Chicago Reader Art Director Sheila Sachs, Gusty WInds, Entertainer of the Year 2005, and yours truly, Jeannie Lieberman of the Fire Island Tide and publisher of FireIslandSun.com and editor of Theaterscen.,net. Dennis McConkey was the tally judge.

Here are but of few of the many contestants – you must see them for yourselves next summer at the Grove!
