WEST ISLIP BREAST CANCER COALITION’S 3RD ANNUAL BRUNCH “CLOSING IN ON CANCER” HONORS KISMET’S WARREN LEM

Margaret Campise

October 26, 2008

West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition’s 3rd Annual Brunch “Closing In On Cancer” held at Southward Ho Country Club, Bay Shore, NY.  This brunch is held every year as a gift to our community on the latest breast cancer awareness. It is open to our community and especially to the many generous people that help us make our funding possible.

West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition raises fund to support our “Lend A Helping Hand” program, which provides services for men and women going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Funds raised also goes to donations to Good Samaritan Hospital Breast Health Center and Mammography Suite, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and lobbying efforts in Albany, NY and Washington DC for Breast Cancer Legislation.

Patricia Licata, President of the WIBCC welcomed everyone and honored past president of 14 years Virginia Regnante. Patricia also introduced  the board of the WIBCC, Margaret Campise, Evelyn Demmers, Alice Lynch, Judy Resnick and our office secretary Debbie Zisman; and announced we will now be covering all gynecological cancers.

Amanda Corey, West Islip High School sang the National Anthem

Amanda is a member of the All State Mixed Choir.

Alice Lynch, brunch chairperson introduced Sister Ellen Moore OP, Good Samaritan Pastoral Care who gave the Invocation.

Margaret Campise, chairperson of the “Clam Shucking Contest”, gave recognition to the community for their support of the event. Special recognition went to Warren & Lee Lem for without them and their restaurant The Out, none of this would be possible.  The Out has provided support to WIBCC for the past 14 years, by holding the annual “Clam Shucking Contest” with all proceeds going to the coalition for it’s programs. Margaret also gave mention to other key people involved with the event such as Linda & Buddy Schumacher, Tim and Jane Mooney & Dorothea Castle.

Margaret also had the opportunity to thank John Staluppi, owner of Atlantic Hyundai for his generous donation of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra, which helped to raise the $47, 800, made at the “Clam Shucking Contest” this year.  Special recognition also to John Picket, Dan Toomey and Robert Wasilko, the team at Atlantic Hyundai. A beautiful plaque of appreciation from the WIBCC and a Certificate of Appreciation from Angie Carpenter, Suffolk County Treasurer was presented.  Dan Toomey and Robert Wasilko accepted the plaque and certificate.

Dr. Paula M. Smith of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories was the keynote speaker. Dr. Paula gave a presentation on the latest discoveries and developments presently underway at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. Paula invited everyone to come to CSHL for a tour to see what is going on there. The presentation was very informative and was followed by a question and answer period.  Patricia Licata then presented Dr. Paula Smith with a donation of $10,000 to CSHL for research.
