KISMET SAND CASTLE COMPETITION

The third annual (!) Saturday August 1st “really just an excuse to have a cocktail party on the beach at sunset (discreetly, of course, with plastic cups”). While the contest has always been a mostly share house event all of Kismet was invited to participate. For the last two years, random teams of little kids have joined the contest, and we've had to institute a separate category for kids' castles, complete with kid prizes like plastic water guns and inflatable rafts.

For the adult category, the prizes: a magnum of wine for each of the four winning teams, and the awards are all named after famous Long Island Luminaries:

The Jackson Pollack Award for most artistic
The Martha Stewart Award for most attention to detail
The Robert Moses Award for greatest feat of engineering
The Billy Joel Award for the BEST OVERALL!

Castle building began at 4pm, and the whistle blown at 6pm. The contest is self-judged-- each participating group examines all the castles and casts its vote for each category, with the only stipulation being that a group can't vote for itself more than once, and it can't vote for itself as the best overall.

.
let’s get busy!

Some just “supervise”

Are those deer tracks?

Uh, oh – the ocean is washing away our work!

MICHAEL JACKSON FACE – CHANCE HOUSE

Immaculately designed a last minute thought to putting a can of Pepsi in his “hair” was aborted

When his nose started to break off many thought that was part of the design!

The hard working Jackson team

WOODS HOLE

As always attention to detail its strongest feature

THE RHINO

Complete with dry ice smoking out of its nostrils

THE COZY A REPLICA

Cozy A is the most architecturally complicated house in Kismet – a daunting task

BVT’S SAND BAR

Bicycle Bill was water boy for this mammoth and ultimately functional design

Complete with cocktails

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

Kids Veronica and from Sunset House won the Walt Whitman prize

Jackson Pollack--Chance house with a Michael Jackson portrait

Martha Stewart--Cozy A with the replica of our A frame house, tied with Woods Hole, with the abstract tableau of kismet and ocean life

Robert Moses—Blue View Terrace with the "sand bar," serving drinks no less!

the Billy Joel—7 Seas, with the huge rhino head with steaming nostrils (dry ice)

the award created for the kids (who called themselves "team impact"), with their amazing use of seaweed, driftwood and natural elements, was named for long island's most famous naturalist, Walt Whitman

Karaoke Contest in Kismet: It was mayhem at the Out last Friday when group houses competed vs. each other: 7 Seas, Cozy A, Chance, CA, BVT Rush’s house among many. Dorothea and I were judges and Rose Liotta, who had just served dinner for 15, came out for one drink and was enlisted as third. The contest was held up by the Yankees/Bosox marathon and MC Dennis finally gave the green light at the 15th Inning (Yanks won 2-0 in the 16th) Winner was John Blesso, Liz of Rush’s house 2nd, & George 3rd (actually that was the “most chutzpah” award) out of a herd of 14 – great fun – the Salteen’s did not take up the challenge for a town vs. town challenge.

The contestants sign up and choose their song

Judge Dorothea – BRING IT ON!

Dennis is flanked by Dorothea and me - judges

Rose Liotta, who had just served dinner for 15 and came to the Out for just one drink, was enlisted as the third judge

Is that Lyn of Rush’s house – she won second

I don’t even think he is singing

Just wants to strip for the judges

This guy thought it was a dance contest

Hey it’s smoky in here

On his knees begging for the vote

She’s got a prop

This guy will do anything

Hmmm, how can I win over the judges?

Yes, that works!

This contest is out of control

We’re HOT!!!

That guy is back...really wants attention

Don’t even remember this one

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, who’s the guy in the hat?

They added a dance routine just in case

George of Cartoon Alley gave it his all

Ended up begging which worked- came in third!

And the winner is……….John Blesso of CHANCE
