FUN FUNDRAISERS:  CLAM SHUCKING & DUCK RACES

KISMET’s 14TH ANNUAL HENRY GATES CLAM SHUCKING CONTEST TO BENEFIT THE WEST ISLIP BREAST CANCER COALITION

Over $46,000 was raised for research..  The Out’s Warren Lem, Margaret Campise of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition (WIBCC) and Jane Mooney of the Fire Island Ferries garnered  donations of food and prizes. 70 items offered in the “Chinese Auction ranging from wine baskets to merchandise, spa, restaurant and sporting event packages. Over 20 items worth up to $600 each were placed in the Silent Auction.    Brittany Mooney designed the posters and t-shirts.  Big-ticket auction items included 2 Budweiser bicycles, a flat-screen television , Southwest Airline tickets, and a new Hyundai from Long Island Automotive Giant/Atlantic Hyundai.

Raffled off were a Wagon of Cheer (a gift from Octagon’s Dolores),  even dates with lifeguards Vinnie & Jack, Inn waitress Jill Metcalf and 3 Fair Harbor lovelies (this date cost Rick C. $100).  Tonimarie Burke won the 50/50, Kelly Briscoe won one of the bicycles, Buddy and Linda won the flat screen TV, and Charles Spencer, who donates all the printing for the event, won the Hyundai.

Volunteer coordinator Dorothea had her troops cook, serve, sell tickets for all the raffles and oversee the Clam and Corn Shucking events. Binnie & Jane coordinated the Tennis Clinic  Many intensive meetings preceded the event weeks in advance but the result paid off!

50/50? Wagon of cheer (who can resist me!)

DUCK RACES

                                      Text & photos by Jeannie

My favorite event (really) –teaching young kids the joy and heartbreak of track betting aided and a-BET-ted by a troupe of accomplices most extravagantly led down the garden path by Long Island Ducks’ Frank Boulton who taught the kids how to get money out of their folks, Sam Wood who improved on track conditions and placed the little duckys (and kids’ hopes) at the gate, judges Rusty & Vic L (who took bribes I hear) to fish out the winners, Chiros who hawked the tickets, and those who made sure they spent their winnings on stuff: Rudy, Patty L, Rosie L, Cindy Stefano & Chris Rosenblum, Cody Baker, Karen Spollen, and whole Phelan family while Alice S. got her dream job of selling dept. shirts and hats with Dominick B!  50/50 was limited to 20 ducks so prize was $500.  We thank Art Weinstein for donating his winnings back to the KFDA, bringing total close to $1,900!

Now here’s how it works……

Organizer Joe McK instructs the group

OK We’re ready…..

The Buck starts HERE

The judges are ready

This is so exciting!!!

AND they’re OFF!!

It’s a slow track

The suspense is killin’ us

Hey we can’t see from here

Where’s mine?

They judges decide
