KISMET’S
ANNUAL DUCK RACES
Photos & text by Jeannie
They came in garbage bags and beach umbrellas – hordes of
little ones in colorful parasols bobbing up and down as they ran thru the rain
– actually hard to tell who was more excited - the kids or their parents. Dom
said “it was a blessing to get them out of the house” He'll know soon enough.
Caroline showed up with her own duck – rumor had it she was going
to bring the 4 real ones Greg gave her but “they couldn’t be trained to race in
time – they fly around too much” – next year? REAL duck races???
Anthony opted for carrying his duck head under his arm like a
headless horse men of old - (guess it got too soggy - we know how heavy wet
feathers can be - just ask a drag queen in the rain
Frank Boulton, owner of the L I Ducks was his usual smooth talking
self announcing the races and donates all the prizes and
Sam & Tom Licari could barely suppress their fun setting up the ducks for
each race –
Little hands grabbed their lucky ducks as parents paid for their
gambling habit from volunteers Cindy & Chris
This one?
Yes
this is the winner
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm…which
to choose?
I’ll
ask my advisor
Are
you sure?
OK
if you all say so
I want this one!!!
while adults were more selective choosing from Patti M & Judi
P’s table
THE
RACE IS ON……….
Thanks to a desperate but ingenious Sam Wood the track
and whole event was moved indoors and everybody but the ducks stayed high and
dry
Now,
you’re sure these are the winners???
Where ARE they???
Joe McK back covering the end of the track chaos with John A as
they sorted out winners for the excited little fans –
Doug Chapey, the winner of the 50/50, donated his winnings back
to the KFD
“Special thanks to the gang of regulars who make this event run
like clockwork. Chris R., Cindy S., Patti R., Joanie M., Lauren D, Kellie
B, Rusty & Judy, Rudy & Patty, the Chiros, Rose &
Victor. Experience counts. Also have to thank new additions Johnny
"Sands" Altieri & Tom L. (is the L short for lawyer?) who
pitched in when it counted.
Joe McK”
Towards the end Dom was selling the green KFD T-shirts at a
"fire sale" for $5 each - guess we can’t ALL have the more successful
tie-dyed ones
The event took in a record $2300,
…..
But as always it was the kids who make this event
such a joy!
Editor’s note: not all the parents of the children shown are on
the mailing list – please alert them about the pictures
